While refractive surgery science has advanced in the areas of myopia, hyperopia, and astigmatism correction, science is still behind in the area of presbyopia (see Confused about LASIK and Reading Vision Correction?). The precision of current laser procedures in reducing or eliminating presbyopia is not yet acceptable for most of the general public. Monovision, (one eye is for distance vision and the other eye is focused for near vision), remains our best alternative for those who wish to see at both distance and near. Keep in mind that monovision LASIK can impair depth perception since good depth perception requires both eyes to be in focus on the same spot both distance and near.
