ALL LASER LASIK

Patients who are considering LASIK have many psychological barriers to overcome, not the least of which is the issue of safety. LASIK is a surgical procedure that reshapes the cornea (the front surface of the eye) beneath a constructed surface flap. The procedure is analogous to shaving down a hump in the floor beneath a surface rug (flap). Fortunately, this is a painless procedure performed with topical anesthesia. The surface flap can be constructed with an oscillating microscopic blade, as most flaps are created, or in a "bladeless" procedure with a laser known as "Bladeless LASIK" or "All Laser LASIK". Both procedures produce a precise incision in the cornea. Dr. Benedetto performs LASIK with either instrument. His preference has recently shifted in favor of the "All Laser" procedure utilizing the latest generation Intralase laser.

Clinical studies and personal experience with the two previous generation laser flap makers did not offer a clear cut advantage, in terms speed of visual recovery, after surgery. For this reason, Dr. Benedetto's ratio of "All Laser" to blade LASIK was about 50:50, taking into consideration the price difference between the two procedures of $1,000.00 and the slight increase in safety of the "All Laser " procedure. However, with the latest, 3rd generation Intralase flap maker, the speed of visual recovery clearly equals and may exceed that of the blade flap makers. For this reason, Dr Benedetto has shifted his practice toward 100% bladeless LASIK. Because of his conviction about "All Laser LASIK", its safety and clinical results, he has made a decision to split the price differential that previously existed between the two procedures with his patients.
